• We talk to sports model & fitness trainer Justine Switalla

Justine is a Melbourne based sports model, fitness trainer and covergirl! Today she takes a break in between sets to talk to us about her training, diet and how she keeps motivated.

What inspired you to start training?

I have been active from a very young age. I used to dance and play all sorts of sports, so joining a gym when I was old enough felt like the right thing to do as I loved working out and feeling fit.

I began training seriously in 2008, after becoming a personal trainer in 2005 I felt it was time to up the anti and really walk the walk. I was in a much clearer head space and took a leap of faith and began training for my first sports model comp which was in Oct 2008, which I won.

From there the snowball effect happened and I am where I am now because I love the lifestyle and I love everything to do with the health and fitness industry.

Do you remember how you felt after your first workout?

Hmmm, that is testing the memory.. haha! I can remember how I felt after my first Body pump class, I was only 15. I am pretty sure that I was crippled for a week.

What motivates you go to keep going to the gym?

My passion for my health and to stay on track with my goals. I love the feeling of feeling fit and healthy.

My body is my temple these days, I treat it with respect and it treats me very well in return. Some would say I am an exercise addict and I suppose in a way I am. I love the feeling of succes after a hard workout, I love pushing myself to new limits.

There really is no end to what we can achieve in our lifetime, the limits we put on ourselves only hold us back.

What are your fitness goals?

I am always training for a thing called "life", I will train for my lifetime to maintain health and happiness. I am currently training to compete in the Sports Model category in the Nabba New Zealand titles and also the INBA Australian titles. On top of that I am always aiming to stay as fit as I can for my Body Attack and RPM classes. I am an Australia wide Trainer and presenter for Les Mills Asia Pacific, so a very high level of fitness is required for me to stay at the top of my game.

What does your current weekly training routine look like?

Monday: Legs
Tuesday: RPM in am and Back in PM
Wednesday: CXworx (core program) and Body Attack in PM
Thursday: Body attack / RPM double class in AM
Friday: RPM in AM and Upperbody in PM
Saturday: Full body weights circuit in AM
Sunday: Rest

Do you follow a specific diet?

High protein low carb. Oats, Nuts, seeds, eggs, veggies and fruit. I try to eat as clean as possible for 6 days of the week with one cheat meal a week.

What is your favourite cheat meal?

Pancakes

Do you take any supplements?

Natural Pea Protein, L-carnatine, spirulina, Vit c, BCAA's.

How do you feel is the best way to maintain a social life without hampering your results in the gym?

I feel that you have learn to enjoy people's company without alcohol. I love going out for brunches and coffees with my friends now to catch up.

A lot of my friends workout so it is always easy to catch up and have a coffee after we train. I enjoy going out for nice dinners with my partner and with my friends, it is possible to be social and be healthy.

What do you know now that you wish somebody had told you when you first started training?

Nutrition is everything! Your body is a reflection of what you put into it. Only until I really understood that did my body start to do what I wanted.
